IT'S 1965, AND BOB BONDURANT SERVES UP A COLD DISH OF HUMBLE PIE TO TEAM FERRARI

Updated: Nov 16, 2021

The only time the FIA World GT was won by a USA team driving an American car. Enzo Ferrari's attempt at domination was altered forever, and we have Bob Bondurant to thank.

The Impossible Glory chronicles that epic battle.

In 1965, Shelby American battled Ferrari for the F.I.A. World Manufacturers' GT Championship. Carroll Shelby’s lead driver Bob Bondurant, dominated the season winning seven of the ten races. This was the first time in history an American driver and manufacturer won the FI A GT Championship. No American team has won the championship again.

I had an interesting personal encounter with the hero of the race while attending the Monaco Vintage GP in 2010.

My wife Lucie and I were out for dinner after a day at the track when we asked the couple at the next table to borrow their salt and pepper. Soon, a conversation started. The gentleman told us they were just married on the track. He continued by telling us that he was a retired racer and, at one time, pulled Jackie Stewart from his flaming car at Spa. Wow, I was already thinking this guy can tell a tale!

When pressed for his name, his reply: Bob Bondurant.

Sounds like the same narrator from Ken Burns' series on the Vietnam war.
