It's over for Fisker... Not long after Henrik Fisker left Fisker Automotive, the company has announced it is reducing its workforce by 75 percent.
“Our efforts to secure a strategic alliance or partnership are continuing in earnest, but unfortunately we have reached a point where a significant reduction in our workforce has become necessary,” a company statement reads.
By the end of the day, Fisker expects to have retained about 25 percent of its workforce. Fifty-three senior managers and executives have stayed with Fisker, Reuters reports, mostly to help find buyers for the company’s assets. What happens next for Fisker Automotive is unclear, but the company is nearing a deadline to repay some of the U.S. Department of Energy’s $193 million loan.

In case you were wondering, the “Moto” in “MotoGP” is short for “motorcycle,” but we’d like to think that the M actually stands for BMW’s M division. Why? Take a look at the photo above: BMW is bringing its sporty models back to this year’s MotoGP series as pace/safety cars.
BMW’s M division first partnered with MotoGP in 1999 when it added some graphics and a light bar to a Z8 for use as a MotoGP safety car. In the years since we’ve seen all manner of BMW M cars at the front of the pack of motorcycles, and in 2009 M went so far as to release the X6 M sports activity coupe to the public in MotoGP safety car form.
This year, BMW M provided eight vehicles for the series. The biggest development is the inclusion of the BMW M6 Gran Coupe, fresh off of its debut at this year’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The 560-horsepower four-door coupe will be joined by the M6 coupe (with two fewer doors), and an M5 sedan (with the same engine), and all three will be used as safety cars. The track’s safety officer will make use of a BMW M3 in what appears to be frozen gray paint. The medics, meanwhile, will use two of BMW’s M Performance models, the M550d xDrive wagons. Finally, the two safety bikes are HP4 models.
The two models will take to the track this weekend at the Qatar Grand Prix, staged at the Losail International Circuit in Qatar.

The 2014 Jeep Cherokee (yes, you read that right) is back in Jeep’s U.S. lineup, serving as a replacement for the aging Liberty midsize SUV that featured far more off-roading capability than on-road fuel economy. The new Cherokee will make its world debut at the 2013 New York auto show at the end of March.
Before any midsize SUV customers hear about the 2014 Jeep Cherokee’s 45-percent improvement in fuel economy, the comments are bound to fly about its new exterior look. Like the Nissan Juke, the 2014 Cherokee has three sets of front lights, including one with LED daytime running lights. The seven-bar Jeep grille is prominently displayed, with a pulled-back look that’s far more modern than the Cherokee of yore — or Liberty for that matter — ever was.
The Jeep Liberty finished 2012 with sales of 75,483, ahead of the Patriot and Compass, but behind the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. With far more competitive fuel economy and exterior styling that will get its driver noticed, the 2014 Jeep Cherokee might just have what it takes to become a more significant part of Jeep’s lineup. And those who complain the 2014 Cherokee isn’t as off-road ready as its predecessor can always buy a Wrangler or Grand Cherokee. Rumor has it that the new Cherokee will use a 3.2-liter version of the Pentastar V-6 and could possibly be one of the first Chrysler products to employ a ZF-sourced nine-speed automatic transmission.
The 2014 Jeep Cherokee will arrive at dealers in the third quarter of this year and be built at Jeep’s facility in Toledo, Ohio.
